Natalie
Natalie Poole is a South African artist, born in Cape Town - where she studied Fine Art. During these years she became highly influenced by Formalist tendencies in Painting, developing various techniques incorporating texture and natural pigments into her work.
Natalie has resided in the UAE since 2003; she has participated in several local exhibitions and has gained extensive international recognition. In 2005 she won the prestigious “Sheikha Manal’s Young Artist Award: New Signatures”, the prize-winning artwork was exhibited by Christies, at the opening of their first Middle-Eastern auction.
Natalie concerns herself with very specific formal issues (as in formal qualities: colour, light, line, shape and texture) to create idea and a cohesive balance in the composition. This approach is rooted in the 1960’s Colour-field move toward a more impersonal and austere intellectual aesthetic. The artistic value of Natalie’s work is entirely determined by its form – the way it is made, its purely visual aspects and its medium. She emphasizes compositional elements rather than realism, context and content. Everything necessary in a work of art is contained within it and the context of the work, including the reason for its creation, is considered to be of secondary importance. Natalie deals with the fundamental formal elements of abstract painting: pure unmodulated areas of colour; flat, two-dimensional space; monumental scale; and the varying shape of the canvas itself.
Her work can be described as intuitive, psychologically resonant and self-conscious, while socially relevant and even empathetic, the work does not overtly or visually reference popular culture. Natalie addresses new ideas about formalism as they relate to contemporary art. The only important truth is the visual impact her painting has on the viewer, the abstract image is self-explanatory and exists on its own merits.
Natalie’s work appears in several international, private and corporate collections of exclusive patrons, including Dubai’s Royal Family.
